New Canadian Lunar series
The first of their new series is out today:
http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/silver...ion-prod690001 I'm really humming and hawing about this. I love the look of the coin, but have a hard time justifying 90$CAN for a sterling silver coin under an ounce. :confused_m: |
Re: New Canadian Lunar series
No purity stamp.
No weight stamp. US$105/ozt No, thanks! |

Re: New Canadian Lunar series
Before I discovered the Australian Lunar series, I collected a fair portion of the Canadian series. At the time that I could get Aus Lunars in the $13-$16 range, the Canadian versions were costing me $55-$65. The Canada coins did come in a nice box but I figured (rightly as it turns out) that I was best served by spending my money on the Aus versions.
The new series does look nice but not US $70-$80 nice, not even close. Canada 1st series below. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2651/...3e51c3a0_b.jpg |

This is a 92.5% coin that weighs less than a troy ounce in alloy. Adjusted to reflect cost for just silver content it is right around $105/ozt. Considering the lack of purity and weight markings this appears to be intended for use as legal tender and not for bullion purposes. Any explanation for that line of thinking? |

Re: New Canadian Lunar series
The pricing of the product is wrong.
Just to compare, the Bobsleigh Silver Hologram coin, has similar characteristics: - important theme (sport vs. lunar) - non-standard silver content (25.7 grams vs. 24.3 grams) - mintage figures (45.000 vs. 48.888) - requires more important technical skills (hologram vs. plain silver) but costs 72 CAD instead of 88.88 CAD. I think the mint wrote the price keeping in mind that "8" is a lucky number for the Chinese... but I think they got it wrong this time. Collectors want: stamped standard weight (1 oz of silver), stamped purity (.999 for instance), cheap price for such a large number of mintage. |

Re: New Canadian Lunar series
After reading the stuff here, I followed my own advise. If a deal is good today, it will be good tomorrow. So after taking a step back and shaking my head, I took the same money and got 2 prospector rounds and filled some of my missing sterling silver Canadian nickels I was missing from my set.
I feel much better and still got my silver fix. Thanks people.:coolbeer: |
